a 'bit on the side', i.e sex with someone who is not your regular partner. But now taken to mean any female. Because a flange in engineering is a bit on the side of the main thing.

DO NOT get these two mixed up...
1) Professionally means the joint between two pipes (as in plumming)
2) Refers to a very smelly undesired (by both sex's) vagina. Probably originated referring to a girls plumming.

It means something is so awesome you can't think of a word for it. Kinda like FRICKEN AWESOME but even better. Usually used with uber in front of it.
