it's a joke

The phrase "it's a joke" is often used to lighten a situation as a defense mechanism. Saying "it's only a joke" is often used when the person has not understood or got offended. Reasons may include:

1. The person was genuinely joking and did not mean to cause confusion or offense
2. The person is backing down after upsetting someone

3. The other person fails to see the point, and is reassured that it's not serious
Ben: "I'm so bored, I hate my job! I wish I could grab a beer!"
Boss overhears Ben's comment to his friend
Boss: "How about I fire you? Then you can get a beer, and a new job!"

Ben: "😳 Sorry boss, I was only joking! Look, I'm writing my report now!"

Boss "....."

Person 1: "There are three kinds of people in the world, those who can count and those who can't."

Person 2: "HOW does that make sense?"

Person 1: "It's a joke."

It's Just A Joke

Another way to say "I'm a dick," used by said dick to paint a person's reaction to a distasteful joke as unreasonable/
I have no respect for peoples' identity, culture, or feelings, but I don't want to face the consequences of that lack of respect, so I'll simply say, "It's just a joke."

It's better to miss a friend than to miss a joke

This comes from a brazilian saying. It basically means that if you're making jokes and someone gets offended ( on a personal level ), that is no reason to stop making those jokes. This, of course, isn't an excuse to just be an asshole, and must be used with nuance. The saying could also be directly translated to

"It's better to lose a friend than to lose a joke"
Guy 1 (whose wife died to stillbirth): Wow, these celebrities are crazy
Guy 2: What happened?
Guy 1: I checked the news, and it looks like the rapper DaBaby killed his wife
Guy 2: Well, "The Baby" also killed YOUR wife
Guy 1: Low blow dude
Guy 2: It's better to miss a friend than to miss a joke
