Refers to a Nextel phone that has the "Direct Connect" function, allowing one to "chirp" their friend with another Nextel phone and talk for free, akin to using a very long range walkie talkie. It is the prefereable cost-conscious method of communication in the San Francisco Bay Area.

To chip someone up means to mess em up. Derived from what happens to a tooth when it is hit hard. It can also be used to loosely describe an object or a person, especially their face.
