Debunk Panopticon

A social and digital condition where debunkers—skeptics, fact‑checkers, and myth‑busters—operate as a dispersed but mutually reinforcing surveillance system, constantly monitoring public discourse for any claim deemed unscientific, paranormal, or conspiratorial. Inspired by Foucault’s panopticon, the Debunk Panopticon does not require a central watchtower; instead, participants internalize the gaze, pre‑emptively self‑censor to avoid being “debunked,” and report suspect claims to a network of influencers, platforms, or call‑out accounts. The effect is a chilling atmosphere where even tentative or speculative ideas are met with ridicule, and the burden of proof is shifted entirely onto the believer. While individual debunkers may act in good faith, the collective panopticon creates an environment hostile to intellectual exploration and cultural difference.

Debunk Bias

A bias that prioritizes debunking false claims over all other intellectual activities, often leading to a reflexive dismissal of any claim that seems unconventional, regardless of its merits. The debunk bias treats the world as filled with dangerous nonsense that must be exposed, and the debunker gains status by tearing things down. This can lead to a cynical posture where curiosity is replaced by suspicion, and any novel idea is assumed guilty until proven innocent. Debunk bias is common in online skeptic communities that mistake constant refutation for critical thinking.

Example: “He spent hours fact‑checking a harmless meme about historical trivia—debunk bias, treating every claim as a threat that must be annihilated.”

Inverted Confirmation Bias

A mirror image of confirmation bias: the tendency to actively seek out and remember evidence that contradicts one's own beliefs, while discounting confirmatory evidence. It's the hallmark of the chronic contrarian or the self‑flagellating intellectual who believes that if they agree with something, it must be wrong. Inverted confirmation bias can be as distorting as its more famous cousin, because it systematically overweights disconfirmation, leading to a persistently negative or oppositional stance regardless of the actual balance of evidence.

A "direct correlation" would mean a correlation of 1. A correlation of 1 is as high as it gets. So I highly doubt the correlation between porn and WHATEVER is 1. A correlation of .7 is HIGH in terms of correlation (apparently). So high that Jordan Peterson cites the correlation when he's talking about the relationship between wealth and sexual selection success. But don't feel bad. You're not the only one using correlation wrong!
