Bury your head in the sand

A well known idiom that means to ignore one's problems. The idiom is largely attributed (falsely) to the ostrich.
Bury your head in the sand means (in theory) that if you can' t see your problems, they can't see you!

Riding the Pine

In team sports, players not actively participating in the game sit on the sidelines or "ride the pine" until the coach puts them in the game.
Even though he was drafted in the first round, he'll probably be riding the pine for a few games before they start him.
