operating system

A combiniation of command interpreters which runs between the central processing unit and software that allow a users to interact with a computer or other electronic device. A phrase that can never refer to any Microsoft product. By its very definition, an operating system must operate, which is the complete opposite of any Microsoft product.

Linux, FreeDOS, DRDOS, BEOS, Unix, OS/400, are all operating systems.

gateway

A portal between two places or pieces of electronic equipment. Has unfortunately been the name of a computer company who made excellent computers until the Pentiums were launched.

A gateway is used to link a unix terminal to an iSeries box.
