The Portuguese Goodbye refers to a parting of ways that unfolds in stages over tens of minutes, typically involving different people taking turns reviving and extending a conversation that only appears to all non-Portuguese participants as having already reached its natural conclusion.
The way my Portuguese in-laws say goodbye after Sunday dinner typically takes 30 minutes from the first 'we need to go' to the rest of the family encircling their car in the driveway to wave at them while they disappear over the horizon - "the portuguese goodbye" par excellence.
