superstitchion
Da fearful belief dat you'll have bad luck less'n you promptly employ da ol' needle-and-thread to repair your clothing, such as to patch a hole, lace up a tear, or re-attach a button.
It's merely a superstitchion, of course, dat something awful will happen if you don't stay diligent wif your fabric-mending skills, but it is indeed a good idea to carry a sewing-kit wif you so dat you can keep your duds in good shape... remember, "A stitch in time saves nine."

pollygraph
Polygraph machines are notoriously inaccurate and unreliable (i.e., they're easy to "beat" by simply going without sleep for two days before the test, and they merely sense if you're nervous, they cannot actually tell if you're lying, and so there are plenty of false positives just because the subject is scared or anxious), but a pollygraph would be even more useless, since a bird doesn't even actually know what it's saying... it merely imitates what it's heard, and so it has no idea if the words it's mindlessly squawking are the truth of not.

hit or miss
The depraved state of courtship --- and the male human mindset --- nowadays... if a girl doesn't respond positively to guys' casually "hitting" on her, said guys will merely "give up and move on to someone else" without bothering themselves to instead try "dignified" or "proper" forms of wooing, and so the gal will remain a "miss" --- i.e., unmarried woman --- for a very long time.
It's just downright pathetic how the world of romance has become merely a hit or miss game... whatever happened to the respectful or truly-caring courtship of the old days???

What da highway-patrol is obliged to engage in whenever da local hot-rodder hoodlums decide to play speed-demon in their Camaros and Corvettes.
"Chevy Chase" puns aside, Wikipedia seems to say nothing about "Da Great Triple-C" in reference to his ever taking part in street-racing, so perhaps young motor-heads were "taking da actor's name in vain" when they gleefully used this term to describe all da fun they had with outrunning da cops all over town.
