Bop TV was a television station created by the government of Bophuthatswana and run by the Bophuthatswana Broadcasting Corporation. It launched on 31 December 1983 and originally broadcast mainly to people living in that homeland.
Why it became famous:
Even though it was meant for Bophuthatswana, its signal sometimes spilled into parts of South Africa, including areas near Johannesburg and Soweto. Because of this, many viewers watched it as an alternative to the state-controlled channels of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
What made it different:
It often showed imported foreign shows and films.
Some programmes aired uncensored compared to other stations.
It mixed English and Setswana programming.
Because of this, people sometimes tuned in just for the entertainment value.
What happened to it:
After apartheid ended and Bophuthatswana was dissolved in 1994, Bop TV was absorbed into the SABC system and eventually closed in 2003.
“In the 1980s, some viewers preferred Bop TV because it showed foreign shows and movies that were not always available on other South African channels.”

Bophuthatswana

the apartheid government’s “VIP Bantustan experiment” where:
You had luxury casinos and concerts at Sun City while the rest of the place was a political puppet state.
The president Lucas Mangope ruled like a homeland CEO who didn’t want to close the business even when apartheid was ending.
In 1994, right-wing militias like the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging rolled in with pickup trucks trying to save Mangope’s regime… and it ended with chaos, shootings, and three AWB fighters killed on live TV.
Student: “Why was Sun City built inside Bophuthatswana?”
Teacher: “Because the homeland government allowed casinos and entertainment that were restricted in South Africa at the time, which helped attract tourism and investment.”

The South African media boss (MacGyver Mukwevho) who turned his podcast empire (Podcast and Chill with MacG) into an actual business‑with‑employees, hiring over 30–40+ young people instead of just spitting hot takes from his couch — basically uncancelable energy IRL. Started as a high‑school DJ and TV/radio host, then built Africa’s biggest podcast with millions of subscribers, bagged awards like Entertainer of the Year, and now is that guy people roast on Twitter while also low‑key respecting his hustle. You try to cancel him — he just pays salaries, drops products in BBMzansi House, and meets international hosts like Charlamagne tha God instead.
“Bruh, that announcement was pure Mac G energy — uncancellable, multi‑award‑winning, and employing an army of Chillers.” 😎
