The full name is "gemeiner haushempel" which is in english somethin like "common househempel". "hempel" is often used as an expression by the german kids. This idea goes back to andreas lange who used "hempel" first as an expression to say that somebody is quite silly. Little time later almost everybody in germany knows how to use it.
