Sharksploitation

Sharksploitation is a subgenre of exploitation film that involves sharks or shark attacks. The genre emerged in the wake of the 1975 film Jaws and its sequels.

Other examples of sharksploitation films include the Sharknado film series (2013-2018), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus (2009), and Dinoshark (2010). A documentary about the subgenre, titled Sharksploitation, was released in 2023.
Peter Benchley, the author of Jaws (the book that served as the source material for the 1975 blockbuster hit of the same name), regrets how his work inspired sharksploitation in the media and led the public to see sharks as vengeful creatures. Benchley became a full-time marine activist and speaker, advocating for shark conservation for the rest of his life.
