It stems from the words whats up. Another term that is very similar is sup. It is believed that this word was brought into existance by a typo.

The noise British people make when accidentally bumping into or walking in on somebody. Normally followed by "sorry" from the other party.
Person1 opens unlocked toilet cubical.
Person2 is sitting on crapper with trousers round ankles.
Person 1: "Wup!"
Person2: "Sorry"

A three letter word; meaning, in, english, "hi" or "how are you?" or "what are you up to?" or more generally "WHAT?" or by coincidence meant literally "what is, UP?"
• Urban •
Pronounced, "wahp" not "wop" and though not correct pronunciation, if you are under the influence of stuff or accent or both you might do your best with, "woop" (as casual and lazy and kind of bassey as you can make your voice when you say it always). as the "uh" shound can be elongated — as well as tone lowered, for emphasis. To summarize, sounds like "'sup"-starting with a "W".
Conjugate: of "what-up?"; also it IS what comes out when you slur primarily "what-up?" or similarly "what? 'sup or "what's up?" or "what is up?" from either intoxication or talking fast due to hyperactivity and thinking faster than you can speak.
Like the word, "'sup", "wup" is in general a greeting, and depending on situation and volume and voice-fluctuation, becomes a question or general concern. The serious difference is that "wup" is not ever an open door to conflict. Whereas, "'Sup!?…" in the wrong situation and volume and voice-fluctuation, can pose opportunity for conflict.

When anyone screams/yells/hollas, "WUP!!!" or "WUUUUUUP!!!" — with fingers hovering over 911 it's the quickest way to figure out if and why someone is in a life emergency or crisis, as in plain english (verbose) "ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE AND DIE, OR DO YOU JUST NEED TO BE BOOKED FOR JERRY SPRINGER LAST WEEK? IF YOU DO NOT RESPOND IN A FRACTION OF A SECOND I'M CALLING 911 AND IF YOU ARE OK AND CAN BALANCE YOUR CHI AND COLOR CODE YOUR CHAKRAS THEN WE'LL ACTUALLY TALK IN FOUR OR MORE WORD SENTANCES (YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN WHEN I YELL, WUP!!!)"
That is an excellent example of the power of the exclamation, " W U P ! ! ! " ; because of the fact that, 62 words, can be clearly interpreted in an instant when this three letter word is used to determine a solution to a crisis or emergency… in less than a fraction of a second!!!
