the pogues

What every neo-celtic punk pop band aspires to be (Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Tossers, etc). On vox, Shane Macgowan, a legend in his own right. Contrary to popular belief, only some members of the Pogues are from Ireland. The first three LPs, classic (Red Roses for Me, Rum Sodomy and the Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God). Alcoholism and rumored drug abuse accusations created a rift between Shane and the rest of the band, leading to an eventual breakup. The Pogues released albums without Shane, and Shane formed his own band, The Popes. There are many bands that have been influenced by the Pogues, but the original is still the greatest.
The Pogues are great. Streams of Whiskey, anyone?

Poguesplaining

Share definition Flag
A somewhat complex term originating from the military term pogue - and frequently done by such service members, poguesplaining is the act of when a person with seemingly high intelligence to their peers, due to their occupation or extensive knowledge on certain topics, gives an explanation for a proposed question that their peers will assume to be true based on their apparent intelligence, when the explanation actually has no basis in reality or is a biased perspective.

For example, the offender could claim that the life insurance policy of their own branch has a higher payout than any other branch in the military. When the offender makes this claim, they are not questioned because they are generally right about many other things or have status that requires high intelligence. However, the claim has no basis in reality (all life insurance policies are the same in the military), and comes from some kind of need to gloat or otherwise from plain ignorance.

Offenders of poguesplaining often go unnoticed until they get something completely wrong and it is rightfully called out by others of similar intelligence. Even then, serial offenders still maintain a status of high intelligence and continue to get away with giving wrong explanations for proposed topics that are simply not true.

The term originates from the non-combative service members who are looked at as being smarter than most, but can apply to almost any civilian world situation of similar nature.
Private Berry - "I think corn is one of the best vegetables you can get at the DFAC, it's just as good as the others and tastes the best by far so it's easier to get more out of it"
PFC POGUE - "Corn is basically only fiber that your body barely digests dude you're hardly getting anything out of eating it"
Private Berry - "Oh, really? That's surprising since it's one of the most commonly eat vegetables, but I'll take your word for it."
(Later) Private Aiple to Private Berry - "Dont listen to him, corn both promotes digestion and contains plenty of vitamins and minerals in addition to being a great source of carbs and fiber. He's just poguesplaining again.

Striver

Share definition Flag
The striver is an interesting phenomenon that is seen across college campuses. In essence, the striver is an over-achiever who comes from a working or middle class family. He may be an immigrant. He may have been a slacker in HS who was "born again" into an academic wunderkind. Or he may just be an over-achiever who is keeping at it.

The striver is willing to sacrifice his social life at the expense of Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. The striver is the guy who stays at the library long after you are gone. The striver is the guy who takes 30 credits/semester and considers anything below an A/4.0 failure. The striver doesn't work on campus, he is too busy finding ways to pad his resume instead of working retail or workstudy. The striver lets his grades pay his education by applying to ten scholarships a year.

The striver is a future Soros/Fullbright/Rhodes/Gates/Marshall/etc. fellow. The striver lives to study. For the striver, their fun comes from the rewards they expect to receive in return for their diligence. Be it Law School, B-School, academia, or politics. The striver seeks to find the American Dream through academic success.
Anthony was a striver. He transfered from a TTT to an IVY and graduated in 2 years. He studied his ass off and went to Penn Law. He got a Biglaw offer. But lost it all because of an unmoderated mesasgeboard.

Successful strivers:
- Barack Obama
- Harold Koh

Delta SkyMiles, also known as SkyPesos, is the frequent flyer program of Delta Airlines. It has a very poor value and hard to use.
- I'm trying to book an award flight to Paris, but I only have 70,000 SkyPesos
- Just forget about it, you don't have enough SkyPesos to fly anywhere.
