A close friend that you are essentially dating but will freak out when the word "dating" is referred to.

This term applies even if the two people both have feelings for each other, and both know it.

One or more of them is uncomfortable about using the word "dating".

Instead all of the synonyms are used instead. terms like: seeing you, going out, getting together, enjoy your company, hang out with, go out to dinner, walk the dog, together.

The other person will NEVER admit to you that you two are in fact dating. Not even after months or years.

Bob and Debbie have been not-dating for three years.

Every one they know thinks they are couple and a good match. But they are just not-dating.

Bob and Debbie usually not-date several weekends and evenings a month.

When two people love each other very very much but aren't officially dating because of other responsibilities or a fear of commitment or some other lame excuse.

Those two are perfect for each other!
Yeah haven't you heard? They're dating-not-dating.

Exclusively not dating

A term used to define the status of a relationship. Neither of the two partners are seeing anyone else, but the title boyfriend/girlfriend puts too much pressure or seriousness to a loosely dating couple. (It is an exclusive relationship and neither are currently looking for another partner--but you would both still be considered "single")

A less tactful term could be “fuck buddies” but sex is not a prerequisite, and emotions are involved.

It's meant to be vague and confusing, because the relationship gets complicated when the lines aren't clearly defined, and the couples status is more than friends, but less than a committed relationship since emotions start to get involved.

Example:
R: So are you two seeing each other, or what?
K: Well sortta, we’re exclusively not dating.

it's not dating

a) Refusing that you are not together or going out with someone
b) A phrase used to make fun of a friend if his voice cracks
c) A phrase to use around people who are known for voice cracking to make them feel bad about themselves

A.Ms. F- So I hear two of my students are dating?
Kevin- It's not dating!

B.Kevin- Lets go make a sandwich. (voice cracks on sandwich)
Evan- It's not dating!

C. Michael- Hey guess lets- (gets cut off)
Evan- It's not dating!
Random kids- Hahaha
