La bohème

A four-act opera by Giacomo Puccini, detailing the life of eight friends living in Paris in 1830-1831 under the struggle of poverty and tuberclosis. The famous 1996 rock musical RENT is an updated version of La bohème.

The main characters are Rodolfo, a poet; Marcello, a painter; Mimì, a seamstress; Colline, a philosopher; Shaunard, a musician; Musetta, a singer; Alcindoro, a state councilor; and Benoît, a landlord.

It is the second most performed opera in North America.
La bohème is Puccini's most famous and popular opera.
