To snitch on someone. Often, to save their own ass. Comes from the old cost for a payphone call, ten cents.

"John got popped, so he dropped a dime on his supplier and they let him go."

2. To unknowingly waste an exceptional amount of money on something.

Drop a dime (verb):
1. "I can't get bud anymore because some punk snitch dropped a dime on my only supply."
2. "Damn, you see Juan's '84 Accord with 22 dubs on it? He dropped a dime on that pos."
