Being deceived over facebook as the deceiver professed their romantic feelings to his/her victim, but isn't who they say they are.
Having a fake facebook profile, images and avatar in order to lure people to have romantic feelings. They are then catfished when the victim realises the person they have falled for via facebook is not who they APPEAR to be

To be deceived or lead on by someone on any social network, or chat session who's claiming to be someone or something they're not and tries anything to make you believe them with words that might interest you. While they're just sitting behind whatever devices they're using and their true identity is being concealed while giving you false information about themselves.
A typical catfisher would:
*Use False info or identification
*tells or sends you anything that interests you (very romantic or sexual
*will ask for money or talk you into joining any website you got to pay for.
*will constantly go through great lengths to ignore or make up an excuse to avoid any telephone conversation or video chatting.
How to avoid it:
*ask as many questions possible and see how they react.
*video chat or have a telephone conversation with them a few times.
*check their pictures or info out (Google the images they use)

To give the impression of being an attractive person in order to attract someone online while being a complete or near opposite of that portrayed.
I met this girl online that looks like Kate Upton, but it turns out I was being catfished because then we met and he looked more like Michael Moore.

A catfish is someone who assumes a false identity on the Internet using various platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. A catfish is often undesirable in comparison to thier profile, as an actual catfish would be to a premium "catch" fish like Alaskan salmon.
I met this guy on match.com who was a total catfish. His pic was cute but he obviously thinks he is a time traveler cause he looked like Matlock!

A Catfish is a person that is not in touch with reality. They use social media outlets to pretend to be someone they aren't. Using all platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and even Tumblr to pretend to be someone else. Some even go to such lengths as creating an "ask.com" account to ask themselves questions to "appear" more real. They don't know who they truly are, and they are not satisfied with who they are in real life. So they create this false "reality" to feel accepted.
A catfish is also a bit sociopathic. They begin to believe they are who they are pretending to be, in pure denial to the point where even when they are found out and caught in their lie, they refuse to admit that they've been lying and they will keep it going.
Often times, a Catfish will not Skype, video chat and sometimes they won't even talk on the phone, as that will reveal their true identity so they avoid that at all cost. They will come up with every and any excuse in the book as to why they cannot have a video chat with you.
A Catfish lies about who they are, where they are from, they even lie about the family they have. Everything about their entire being is usually always a complete lie.
These characteristics can also be diagnosed as "Dissociative Identity Disorder" in which the individual has multiple personalities in which they have developed individual names, personal history and characteristics for their other personality.

After all of these years of being online friends, it's hard to cope with the fact that Lloyd is really a catfish.

when a man or a woman lies about their appearance on the internet only for it to later be discovered that they do not look how they portrayed or they are not who they said they are.
