Tyranny of Spectacle

The domination of social life by images, performances, and mediated events that replace direct experience and authentic interaction. Drawing on Debord’s concept, the tyranny of spectacle reduces politics to public relations, protest to hashtags, and relationships to curated feeds. Spectacle disconnects people from their own lives, making them spectators of a reality that is performed for them. It breeds passivity, cynicism, and a sense that nothing is real unless it is seen by others.
Example: “The politician’s ‘listening tour’ was staged for cameras, with pre‑selected questions and a carefully lit backdrop—tyranny of spectacle, where the appearance of engagement replaced any actual listening.”
