An agreement between individuals wherein the last surviving participant inherits all of the assets from each member. Alternatively, the assets may be split evenly among each of the surviving members after a certain period of time.

To decide who would inherit our father's mansion, my brothers and I entered into a tontine. Only two of us remain.

A name in Nahuatl, an Aztec dialect and means "mother earth".

It cannot be said easily, so just calling them "Nancy" is generally accepted.

Guy 1: Hey, have you met my friend Tonantzin?
Guy 2: Ta-what-zon?
