Thoreauvian Leftism

A broad term for left‑wing politics (socialist, communist, anarchist, etc.) that incorporate Thoreauvian values: simplicity, ecological awareness, civil disobedience, and suspicion of large institutions, including leftist parties. Thoreauvian leftists prioritise local, prefigurative action—building alternative communities, resisting pipelines, living simply—over electoral politics or central planning. They are often critical of industrial civilisation and technological solutionism, seeking a degrowth transition to a society where people can be truly free because they need so little.
Example: “The collective ran a free library, a community garden, and a tool‑sharing shed—Thoreauvian leftism: building the new world in the shell of the old, one hand‑built shelf at a time.”
