Thoreauvian Conservatism

A conservative approach that draws on Thoreau’s reverence for tradition, local knowledge, and the wisdom of nature, while rejecting modern consumerism and technological hubris. Thoreauvian conservatism defends small communities, voluntary simplicity, and the preservation of wild spaces against both corporate development and state overreach. It is sceptical of abstract ideologies and grand plans, preferring the slow accumulation of custom and the discipline of self‑reliance. Unlike mainstream conservatism, it is deeply environmentalist and distrusts both markets and military power.
Example: “He opposed the new highway, quoting Thoreau on ‘improvements’ that destroy what they claim to improve—Thoreauvian conservatism: defend the old ways, especially the old way of walking alone in the woods.”
