Simpletonacy

A cognitive and social bias that functions as the opposite of conspiracy theorizing: the assumption that only the most superficial, official, or mainstream narrative about any event or phenomenon is true, and that any attempt to look deeper, question motives, or consider alternative explanations is automatically "conspiracy theory." Simpletonacy treats the surface as the whole, official statements as infallible, and any deviation as pathological. It is the lazy comfort of the incurious mind: "What they tell us is what happened. End of story." This bias leads people to dismiss legitimate investigations, whistleblower accounts, and even documented evidence simply because those accounts do not match the official version. It is a form of intellectual closure that mistakes trust in authority for critical thinking.
Example: "He refused to read the leaked documents, saying 'the government wouldn't lie.' Simpletonacy: preferring the comfort of official stories over the discomfort of inquiry."

Simpletonacy Theory

A theoretical framework that identifies and critiques simpletonacy as a widespread cultural and cognitive phenomenon. It argues that in an age of information overload, many people retreat to the simplest, most authoritative-sounding narrative as a defense against complexity. Simpletonacy theory examines how institutions, media, and education systems often reward this shallow acceptance, punishing those who ask difficult questions. It also explores the psychological appeal of simpletonacy: certainty is comforting, doubt is anxiety-provoking. The theory does not claim that all official narratives are false, but that the reflex to reject any alternative as "conspiracy" is itself an irrational bias—one that stifles inquiry and protects power.
Example: "Her simpletonacy theory presentation showed how mainstream media trained audiences to dismiss any critical report as 'conspiracy,' thereby shielding institutions from accountability."

Anonymous Rando: Almost no one is talking about the genocide in Nigeria.

CR: Don't be simpletonic. "Most" or "few" do not mean "all" or "none." Come on!
