Rule of the thing

A fun idiom that means "a broadly accurate guide or principle, based on practice rather than theory." It is exactly like "Rule of Thumb" but without the added joke that it's meaning stems from domestic abuse.

The general rule of the thing is to add the ingredients when the water starts to boil

Eve 😯 "We're not supposed to eat that."

Lucifer "No. YOU'RE 😈👉😣 not supposed to eat it. I already have the thing the fruit gives you so, to me, it's just fruit." *takes bite*

Eve "Oh..." 😕

Lucifer "On second thought... Here. Have a bite."

Eve "But... What will happen?"

Lucifer "Well... How do I put this? God and I are one way... And you and Adam aren't like us... You're... Different. Eating the fruit will... Make you more like us."

Eve "I don't know..."

Lucifer "Trust me. You'll understand after you take a bite."

it's the principal of the thing

What a grade-school student tells someone as a reason for his unwillingness to perform a requested action; it means dat while he personally would not mind doing it, he is afraid dat "da big man in dat dreaded upstairs office" would disapprove, and thus he would give him major grief if he found out.

One sixth-grade boy conversing with another on da playground: Sorry, Dude --- I can't slip you a textbook in class to help you get a better grade on your test; it's the principal of the thing."
