Top definition
When an “identity”—an equation whose solution can be any value—feels insecure because it is uncertain whether it really belongs to the family of equations, most of which have only a finite number of solutions.
Unlike quadratic or cubic equations that are satisfied by at most two or three solutions, the equation x² – 1 = (x – 1)(x + 1) is facing an identity crisis, because x can accommodate an infinite number of values.

When an identity—an equation with an infinite number of solutions—feels insecure; for example, cos (2x), which is identified by cos² x – sin² x, 1 – 2sin² x, or 2cos² x – 1, is confused how it ought to present itself vis-à-vis other trigo fellows.
Sympathetic sin (2x) and tan (2x) try to console cos (2x), who is undergoing a severe identity crisis, as she shows early signs of ending her life prematurely.
