Known as "sneakers" on the East Coast and "tennis shoes" in the south and western United States, gym shoes are used for exercising and oftentimes are worn in normal, informal settings. The term "gym shoes" is limited mostly to Chicago and the immediate area, even though it is the correct term and the rest of the country is incorrect.

Any type of athletic shoe that you didn't just walk into the gym wearing them. They arnt worn on the streets, so are void of gum, loose dirt, car oil, or any other material that might make the gym floor have loose or gooey stuff on it after you use it.
Gym shoes- change from street shoes to gym shoes. If you forgot your gym shoes, be courteous by checking that your street shoes don’t have gum or loose dirt
