A form of psychological abuse in which someone (historically male) attempts to invalidate or belittle another person (historically female) by painting a picture of them as 'psycho' or 'crazy'.
This is often done to justify, or deflect from the abuser's behavior.

This can be done in numerous ways

1) By attempting to trick the person themselves into thinking they are insane. Trying to make them lose trust in their own memory or perception.

2) By provocatively baiting someone (often by taunting them or pushing their buttons) into reacting 'irrationally' so that you may demonstrate to others that they are 'unmanageable', 'psycho' or 'crazy'.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was having an affair. In an attempt to 1) get rid of his wife, and get her out of the picture, and 2) justify his infidelity, he would try to convince her and others of her insanity. He would hide her belongings, torment her, withhold information from her then insist he told her and she simply forgot. This led to her being locked away in a mental asylum.

"Did you see how Michael was gaslighting Amber on Love Island last night? Her reaction to him cheating was completely sound until he provoked her by taunting her, and now he thinks he has proven his point that she is 'childish' and 'crazy'."

Gaslighting:

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse that's seen in mental abusive relationships. It's the act of manipulating a person by forcing them to question their thoughts, memories, and the events occurring around them. A victim of gaslighting can be pushed so far that they question their own sanity.

Women are very well known for gaslighting throughout the world they will constantly move things that someone else has placed somewhere then act as if they did not do so. Most of the time women do this in order to upset their paryner to the point where they blow up and argue, so that they (women) can then play the victim of emotional abuse themselves all while making the other party feel like a mad man losing his mind, with now a blame problem added to it all while they (men) sit in sorrow and regret questioning what is wrong with themself.

Don't fall for "Gaslighting" call it out!

When a ‘significant other’ or friend stops wanting to hang with you unless they can’t find anyone else to hang with.
Some believe this terminology roots back to the operation of a gas lantern and how it can be turned down in an instant as not to waste fuel (i.e. a persons time) and then turned back up once there is insufficient natural light (i.e. there’s no one else to hang with).
Unsuspecting Dupe: “Man, I don’t know what’s up with Emmy. Everything’s cool and then all of a sudden she won’t call for a couple weeks; then she’ll just start showing up again.”
Unsuspecting Dupes friend: “Yea, she’s gaslighting you bro’.”

A word that mentally unstable or insane people have made up. They use this word in an attempt to accuse somebody else of psychological abuse when in reality they are just delusional. They will also do this in an attempt to hide, or even justify the delusions in their own mind.
Mark: "Jessica thats not how it happened you're delusional."
Voice 1 in Jessica's head: '"It doesn't matter if youre wrong. Just tell him he's gaslighting you!"
Voice 2 in Jessica's jead: "yeah!"
Jessica: "Mark please stop this you're gaslighting me!"
Mark: "What? Gaslighting? Here you go again, making up words. You need help!"
