Defines a moment before a person is about to engage in a borderline insane event in an attempt to be epic, but could possibly be catastrophic. This event turns out be both epic and catastrophic
Darren went off the ramp, slammed into a tree but ended up landing the epistrophic jump on the dirt bike

Jim got an epistophic bite on his fishing rod and ended up reeling in a 3 ft American Eel (sea monster) that tangled his line.
