Critical Thinking Violence

The weaponization of “critical thinking” as a label to dismiss, humiliate, or exclude those whose reasoning does not conform to the accuser’s standards. Critical thinking violence often involves demanding that others display “critical thinking” by agreeing with the accuser, and labeling any disagreement as “uncritical” or “gullible.” It is common in online debates where one side claims the mantle of rationality and treats opponents as brainwashed. The violence lies in the assumption that the accuser alone possesses critical thinking, and that others must prove their worth by submitting to interrogation.
Example: “He told her she ‘needed to learn critical thinking’ when she questioned his sources—critical thinking violence, using the phrase as a club to avoid actual dialogue.”
