The appeal is fallacious when used to dismiss non-scientific ways of knowing—philosophy, art, experience, tradition—as if the scientific method were the only path to truth. It's scientism in rhetorical form: using the prestige of scientific procedure to police the boundaries of legitimate inquiry.
