i don't know for sure, but it seems to be similar to "pulling the wool over one's eyes"

When my parents suspected me of lying to them, they told me that they thought I was spreading the blanket a bit.

Spreaders

People who re-tweet others mugshots/embarrassing photos of people that they barely know just for their personal pleasure/to feel better about themselves. Most of these people have no lives and sit behind the computer all day long.

I got arrested for disorderly conduct yesterday and I've already got 6 spreaders on Wake County mugshots Twitter page spreading my mugshot everywhere.
