The Japanese game did intend her name as Aerith, because it sounds similar to Earth, representing her being the protector and ultimate savior of the Planet, having become one with Gaia when she became part of Lifestream. Somehow the American team really did make a whoopsie.

Aerith saved the Earth after dying, and used her powers as the last Cetra to control Lifestream and use it to protect and save the Earth.
