The emo subculture originated in the late 1980's-1990's. It started off meaning "Emotive" or "Emoticore" refering to a type of hardcore punk. The original emo bands were ones such as Rites of Spring (who claim their fans started the term emo), and Embrace.
During the late 1990's faded from it's place in the mainstream, but did exist. One of this time's signifigant emo conerstones was Weezers album "Pinkerton".
From 2000 on emo came back (harder than ever!). When emo came back, it's true meaning was somewhat lost and certain fasets of the true emo culture changed. "Emo" now is said to stand for "emotional" and many bands that emo people listen to are a very washed down, pop, sad version of punk. Such modern emo bands are Dashboard Confesional, and Further Seems Forever. With it's change of meaning modern emo's act very emotional. Often they show signs of depression, wearing black and having a very pessimistic view of the world.

It's typically pointed at kids, mainly ranging in age from 13-22 because of hormone imbalances, who act "emo"tional and wear dark colors because they were individualized. Get the Emomug. AS the meaning of the word used in modern times.
An Emo is GENERALLY a extremely depressive person who broadcasts these feelings in extreme ways to grasp for attention.
The majority of "emos" wear your stereotypical tight black clothing with a mix of dark cold colors like purple and blue and on the off occasion red and pink. Also sporting the current hair style of bangs over one of both eyes with longer collarbone length hair for males and long hair for the females. Also usually darker tones, presumable dyed if the natural coloring wasn't dark enough.
Accessories usually include some kind of music device. (CD player covered in stickers and black marker, small oddly brightly colored mp3 players with ear buds so as to not interfere with their hair.)A personal journal and some kind of form fitting hooded zipper jacket.
Some also wear makeup. nothing too drastic usually sticking to the dark colors again, eyeliner and mascara mostly, for males and females. Some go as far as to use glitter to draw attention to the eyes.
A moderate amount of "emos" cut to "show the world their inner pain." This would sometimes be the skin scraping enough to scab, *supposed "Posers"* Or to the depth that stitches may be required. *Authors personal opinion, these "cutters" should be locked up in a safe facility.*
Some "emos" may be expressive enough about their feelings to show them as expressively as the prophets of ancient times. Screaming, rantings, crying, sobbing, and so on in the negative and angry emotions.
The combination of all the things said above make "emo" an easy target for modern society to scorn. which seems to be the ultimate goal of most "emo" people.
*Side note: Emo's do not have a set age, height, weight, or race limitation. The author in fact knows a family of "emos". though it is odd that the mother has followed the vast majority of "attention Trends" for the past ten to fifteen years. since the birth of her first child. "Country Girl", "Harley Enthusiast", Feminist, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, and now "emo/cutter". TO which she posted bulletins about the last three changes on her myspace. Could be something to that.*

Get the Emomug. emo kids fucking suck at life. just because someone is depressed, have suicidal tendencies, or cut themselves does not mean they are in the emo scene. emo kids have have tainted everything for people who actualy suffer from depression and do cut themselves. they do not self-mutilate for enjoyment they do it as a control issue as they feel they have no control in their life and the physical pain is all that they can feel at that time as they feel empty inside. they don't do it for attention as emo kids do or to fit into a scene that has some of the most god awaful music(ie. blood brothers). fuck emo kids up the ass with the knife they use to cut themselves with.
emo - verbalize that they are deprssed, hate life and try to show their cuts to the world with a saddened look to their face

Get the emomug. A whiny little bitch feeling sorry for themselves, hates the government (with a passion), wears retartedly tight clothes, especially pants and often wears a ridiculous amount of checkered stuff. (Dont forget the half-bleached hair). They serve no purpose and should all be sent to a remote isolated island so they can cry and cut themselves to Fall Out Boy, Panic? At The Disco and My Chemical Romance (among others). Usually will never admit being emo and will become increadibly defensive and occasionally violent when called emo (usually embarassing themselves because they have a blood loss due to too much cutting).
