Rahm Emanuel spent most of 2015 protecting killer cop Jason Van Dyke. Van Dyke murdered Laquan McDonald, a black teenager from the west side of Chicago, in October 2014. Van Dyke and other officers claimed that McDonald lunged at them with a knife and died after Van Dyke shot him once. A dash cam video of the incident, released in November 2015, showed this wasn’t true: McDonald never lunged at the cops, was walking away from them when Van Dyke started shooting, and was shot 16 times. Rahm fought to prevent the public from seeing the video so the cops could maintain their cover story.
Rahm now spends his time going on talk shows, where he complains that Democrats are too supportive of trans rights. Instead, he claims that Democrats should focus on “kitchen table issues” like the plight of students who cannot read. This is deeply ironic to anyone who remembers his time as mayor, given that literacy rates didn’t seem to be a concern of his when he closed 50 Chicago public schools back in 2013.
