nub was derived from the original newb which is short for newbie, or someone that is new at a game. The actual string of derivations goes like this: newbie,newb,n00b,<at this point it splits>-j00b or nub, at which point fub is added.
Best used as a noun, but like almost any word created on the internet, can be made a verb by adding -ing, creating fubbing.
