Formerly a way for a nice guy to express frustration that a female friend of his was always telling him she needed to be with a guy like him in between dating guys who treated her like crap. Now a reason for misandrist feminists to play the victim card and write shrill screeds about how the concept of the friend zone is "sexist" and claim that the men think being nice to a woman obligates her to have sex with them. The feminists ignore the probability that the men actually want relationships with the women and the women really are just shallow and attracted to "bad boys" who really do treat them like crap.

This leads to the girl thinking that they are just friends, or in some extreme scenarios that he is a homosexual. The boy will usually keep spending time with her even after being repeatedly told by his friends to give up on her and move on.
