daylight savings depression

The sudden influx of sadness that occurs after daylight savings time in the fall, when people struggle to become re-acquainted with the soul-crushing darkness outside that now occurs at 5pm.

I have such a serious case of daylight savings depression that all I want to do when I get off work is order takeout and watch "Murder, She Wrote" marathons.

BTU-saving entry/exit

Refers to a K1-saving action that you take during colder weather, and consists of rapidly opening the front door of a home/business only as far as you need to in order to quickly slither through, and hastily slapping the door shut again to minimize heat-escape.

Small barber-shop owner: Most of my customers don't seem to realize that it really costs me a pretty penny to heat my place of business... they leisurely take their sweet old time to amble in and out, and just let the door gradually close on its own. A few thoughtful/aware folks, though, do diligently employ the "BTU-saving entry/exit" procedure when passing through my door, and I really appreciate that.

Forced Savings

(1) The process of paying off a mortgage is "forced savings." As one's home appreciates in value while simultaneously the balance owed is paid down over the years, the process accumulates wealth for the homeowner whether or not they intend to do it. The bank doesn't really give you many options to stop paying either.
(2) The practice of advancing clocks in warmer months against the will of the people.

A mortgage is truly a forced savings account that has helped many people build wealth over time.

Saint Sebastian

An early Christian saint and martyr (died c. 288). The Roman emperor Diocletian had Sebastian shot full of arrows. When this failed to kill him, and he continued to be critical of Diocletian, the emperor had him clubbed to death.

EXAMPLE:

' Mary Alice was smiling at a picture of Saint Sebastian, by the Spanish painter El Greco . . . Saint Sebastian was a Roman soldier who had lived seventeen hundred years before . . . He had secretly become a Christian when Christianity was against the law.
