A highly intelligent person whose intellectual curiosity inspires him/her to work hard at a difficult subject, often merely for personal pleasure, and often obtaining formidable knowledge as a result.
People who are addicted to video games and consequently know a lot about them don't count.

someone who's simply smart doesn't mean he's a nerd godammit! A nerd is an anti-social moron who doesn't like sports, music and girls. A nerd dedicates his life to wasting it by studying for no reason, and doesn't even have any fashion tastes.
A kid with broken glasses fixed with masking tape, short pants with a tucked in shirt and underwear with cartoons on 'em, and a frikkin' name tag on his shirt. Wtf man?

Somebody who acts in a way that makes no sense to you.
In modern U.S.-originated global culture, the term is mostly used by jocks to refer to brainiacs, but in mid-Twentieth century Britain, a nerd was more usually someone who acted foolishly or recklessly, without considering the consequences, or was simply clumsy.
Consider: A student sits in the library studying hard for an important exam tommorrow. Her fun-loving soon-to-be burger flipper classmate lounges about on the grass outside soaking up some rays. Each looks through the window at the other and declares "What a nerd!"
Nerd can be used as an affectionate put-down among friends, usually indicating foolishness, or as a calculated insult, where it's meaning is somewhere between loser and geek.

Someone who enjoys sedentary persuits, for example he or she will not play football but will enjoy playing computer football. The nerd will have a high general knowledge due to the sheer amount of time he or she wastes watching television or perusing the internet and talking to other nerds. A nerd often confuses this general knowledge with intelligence, and therefore feels that they are superior to people with social skills. A nerd often listens to music with little or no rythm, such as goth or the smiths (great band though they were thanks to Johnny Marr), especially if the music contains self pitying lyrics.
Nerds often play internet computer games, and refer to people who are not as good as them as 'noobs'. This is particularly popular insult amongst nerds for non-nerds.
It is ironic as most of them are virgins, so are in fact 'noobs' in the real world.

Nerd:
Person who typically does not worry too much about appearance or the oppostie sex (or any sex for that matter)
and normally does not even consider breaking rules. They are hard working people who are consider odd by the 'preps'.
There is a different between Geeks and nerds. Geeks may try, but they do not work to their full capability and are obsessed with electronics. nerds care about life and think of the future and become very successful.^^

a geek, however the average nerd does not consider him/herself awesome, like a geek. A nerd will usually be more rigorus in their intellectual activities rather than in nonintellectual activities.
Frank was a nerd, however his friend Joe (his LAN party friend) was a geek who was shmoozing with friends.
