It was actually from the Latin word for person of color and derived into the Spanish/Portuguese/French language referring to people of color without any negative connotations. The American society has twisted this word to negatively affect minorities.
Check Wikapedia or an actual Encyclopedia before talking about something you haven't fully verified. What others say the word "nigger" means does not make it true, at all, but in fact makes them ignorant to the real meaning and origin of the word.

This word was used to define any person with non-white skin...even Native Americans. The word caught on as slave owners successfully tried to turn their slaves against each other. Soon slaves were calling each other "niggers". It created an air-tight system that would continue to oppress for hundreds of years to come.
