Ajam

An offensive term for anyone who's not an Arab. Can be used non-offensively as well.

Literally translated to "mute", used as such because Arabs considered people whose language they couldn't understand to be mute.

With the growing prominence of Arabs due to the spread of Islam, the term began to sting a lot when applied on anyone. It began to be associated particularly with Iranians after the conquest of the Sassanid Empire by the Rashidun Caliphate. To add in the extent of this, the Ottomans started using the word to refer to Persians, even though by Arab standards they themselves would be Ajam. Even now some Iranian muslims willingly call themselves "Ajam".
