a question used to continue a conversation, normally found at the begining or at a weak point in a conversation. Usually are worded so more information can be used to answer then is strictly required. Can also be used to refer to statments that imply more information is required.

A phrase or statement that is extremely inappropriate to say to whoever you are talking to. Often said accidentally when mixing up close friends and relatives.

Guy: "Well at least she isn't bald due to cancer..."

Female friend: "What the hell did you just say?!?"

Guy: "Shit, looks like I just stepped on a conversational landmine..."

Consolation Success

Consolation success or a consolation achievement is when you put a lot of effort and concentration into achieving something or getting better at something, and only after you've tried for so long that you begin to give up, do things start to "work out" for you. Often, it is more of a slap in the face than a happy acquisition. The consolation comes in giving you your success only because you worked yourself so hard that you gave up and life begins to feel sorry for you. God's way of playing keep away perhaps.

"After so many years in the movie business and his involvement in tonnes of great films, Christopher Plummer only received his first oscar in 2012, at the age of 83. That consolation success must feel more painful than if he retired with no award at all."

Conversation cul de sac

A conversation cul de sac is the term used to describe the annoying and/or awkward situation that stupid people end up in when talking to a much smarter person. You can subsequently describe either the person or the situation as conversation a cul de sac.

Example 1
As a personal description
"Hey Dan, you meet Gemma the other night? She's is a total conversation cul de sac - every time you try and talk about current events, travel or something else interesting, she manages to make reference to E channel, the Kardashians or Grey's Anatomy."

OR as a situation description
"Hey Dan, I walked into a total conversation cul de sac talking to Gemma last night about the fucking E channel, the Kardashians or Grey's Anatomy."

Example 2
As a personal description
"Hey Jess, you talk to Roger last night? He's a total conversation cul de sac - he just can't seem to hold a conversation on anything other than basketball. For fuck's sake the season's not for three more months - he's so annoying!

OR as a situation description
"Hey Jess, I felt like I was watching a VHS that kept rewinding after 30s last night talking to Roger. It's like walking into a conversation cul de sac over and over again with that guy."
