a fast style of music created most of the time by 3 chord progessions.

bands that fall into the punk rock genre are the sex pistols, the clash, the ramones, iggy pop and the stooges, the buzzcocks etc.

bands that do not fall into the punk rock genre are led zeppelin (someone said this in an earlier post, they are hard rock, not punk rock), good charlotte, blink 182, avril lavigne, simple plan, sum 41 etc.

Punk Rock

A genre of music defined where the musicians could give a shit about being famous and touring Zhakanagistan but would rather just play in the garage. Real Punk Rock is good. Don't confuse Punk Rock with "we won't to get noticed so we're going to call ourself but actually do the exact opposite of" punk. 17 year old boys who dye their hair pink, paint their nails black, and wear girls genes 2 sizes to small are not punk rock either. Anybody who seriously says something along the lines of "Thats so punk rock" definetley don't understand punk rock.

It is not about how cool you are, or how much better you are. Its about community. Its about expression. Its about going into a pit and being able to beat the shit out of someone and 5 min later you are friends. Its about not giving a shit what others say or think. Its being true to yourself.

punk rock

A style of music that originated in New York in the mid 1970s. Although many people claim to know the true origins of punk rock, few really do. Originally a movement of alienated youth, today it is used as a moniker to describe any horrible piece of trash that receives frequent rotation on FM radio. A word absolutely devoid of it's original meaning and virtually destroyed by the popular media.

Black Flack circa 1980 was the definition of a punk rock band; explosive and threatening. Blink 182 is the present definition of a punk band; safe and non-threatening.
