Even though you can hear the pain in the lyrics due to things like heteronormativity, homophobia in religion and the fear of not being accepted, the lyrics outline a a larger importance. This importance is the knowing that love is love, valid and not wrong in any way, and how we truly feel is a fundamental and unchangeable part of who we are.
