We did not understand why our Thanksgiving turkey only had one wing until my grandfather explained the custom of the Welsch promise, and it’s purpose of honoring his guests.

It is particularly common here in Stockholm, Sweden among the musicians and just people in general. I call it this the "Stockholm Promise".
Yeah he did the old Stockholm Promise by saying "we should grab a beer/coffee/whatever next week" and then disappears for next X months
