Welsch promise

Old Welsch custom of giving a gift of food with one serving missing.
The “Promise” of the gesture was that this gift would not be given if it were not at least good enough for the person giving the gift. The missing serving was presumed to be used to confirm the quality of the item and evaluate possible improvements.
The custom is thought to have originated in the mid-seventeenth century.
We did not understand why our Thanksgiving turkey only had one wing until my grandfather explained the custom of the Welsch promise, and it’s purpose of honoring his guests.

Stockholm Promise

I think I coined a new term... you know when someone agrees to something but the ducks, dives and avoids messages or conversations about it? It is particularly common here in Stockholm, Sweden among the musicians and just people in general. I call it this the "Stockholm Promise".

Thumb Promise

A Thumb Promise is a promise stronger than a pinky promise. It shall never be broken, and if so, then the person who broke it may never be trusted again. Crossing your fingers does not invalidate a thumb promise.
“She thumb promised me she’d get me a drink if i called mom upstairs for her.”
