something or someone they are not in order to gain approval, attention, acceptance, or social status. A poser adopts an exaggerated or manufactured persona to appear
cool, relevant,
popular, or relatable, often changing their behavior, appearance, opinions, or mannerisms to fit in with a particular crowd.
On the
internet, this behavior
may be driven by a desire for followers, likes, friendships, validation, or attention. The image being projected is often more important to the poser than whether that image is authentic or even remotely reflects who they actually are.
In simple terms: the persona is a performance created for acceptance.
Example: Someone who suddenly adopts the clothing,
slang, attitude, interests, or identity associated with a certain group—not because it naturally reflects them, but because they believe doing so will make them look cooler or help them gain social approval.
