straw tapping

(Originated in Delco) Straw tapping is a drinking activity involving two people per team. One glass is placed under a beer tap and two straws are inserted into the glass. The tap is pulled and both people drink the beer out of the cup through the straws as quickly as possible while not allowing the glass to fill up. Often timed and matched up vs. another team of two.

straw poll

An extremely unorganized form of voting, usually used by self-appointed leaders when they don't have the desire to actually consider what the group wants but need to make it look like it was a majority decision.

Intramural captain: "Okay dudes, who can make it Monday to practice? Quick straw poll!" (two people out of thirty raise their hands)
Captain: "Monday it is!"
Guy #1: "90% didn't vote."
(Captain shoots Guy #1 in the face.)

Straw taste

When a bartender sticks the straw into a freshly made cocktail and pulls a bit out with suction to taste for quality and probably enjoy.

I got ripped off, that tender took three straw tastes of my custom drink. If she keeps it up she's not going to be able to walk.

When you pull pubic hair or chote hair out and toss it over your shoulder causing it to land on the person's face who is standing directly behind you.

Straw cat

A false assumption based on cowardice, which is then used as the basis of an argument in an attempt to discredit an opposing idea. So called because of the yellow stripes of the pampas cat (also known as the straw cat)

Religious fundamentalists who fear Darwin, deliberately misprepresent his ideas so that they can discredit them. Their assertion that humans are descended from monkeys is not what Darwin said, and is the flimsiest of their straw cats, with its yellow stripes boldly displayed.

straw dog

In business, something (an idea, or plan, usually) set up to be knocked down. It's the dangerous philosophy of presenting one mediocre idea, so that the listener will make the choice of the better idea which follows.

It backfires with some frequency, as the listener (out of sheer perversity) will insist on the straw dog.
