Metalcore is a blend of metal and hardcore music. Metalcore includes breakdowns and intricatley played riffs and chords. The vocalists usually sing the verses in line and to the beat of the music and the riffs played by the band. It's not that hard to distinguish different genres of metal and hardcore and emo because of the way that the band plays their instruments, stage presence, and their sound in their screams.....being that I personally interested in hardcore and metalcore the most, I believe that I gave an accurate description.

Lets clear this up, being a scene kid i know what im on about! Metalcore is is a genre of hardcore and metal but mostly mhardcore. Most metalcore bands have beatdowns and sometimes interludes!

Bands like poison the well are described as melodic hardcore/metalcore. Bands such as atreyu or avenged sevenfold are NOT metalcore NOR hardcore. They are Post-hardcore. Examples of REAL hardcore bands are minor threat and gorilla biscuits.
Examples of Metalcore are.. Converge, Zao, Underoath(old) Norma Jean, The Red Chord.

Killswitch Engage, Lamb Of God, Trivium are NOT metalcore!!!!

how to spot a metalcore kid:

dress: tight, faded fashioncore band shirts (most likely to have the band name in front of a pool of blood) tight, faded/ripped jeans that cost way too much, bandana around neck or mouth, white studded belt.

appearance: shaved head/mid length hair covering eye, stupid looking tunnels in earlobes the sixe of your pinky, lip and/or eyebrow piercings optional.

music: Usually whatever faux metal/hardcore band it's cool to like at the time. Nowadays, it's Norma Jean, Underoath, Atreyu, etc.

dance: Hardcore dancing (Swinging your arms and legs around in a vain attempt to look HxC)

attitude: An air of great superiority due to their apparently "flawless" taste in music and fashion.

Screen name: includes too many X's, words like "gun", "bang", and "kill". Often including their current favorite band's name.

Known to take oddly angled myspace pictures that all look the same, edit them in photoshop, then post 20 of them on their HxC pimped out Myspace.

A kid who listens to metalcore. Band shirts, bandanas, faded jeans, long hair and Chuck Taylor's would be typical to wear. They enjoy hardcore dancing and going to shows. They're a little slow when it comes to music; as in, not cutting-edge. Usually, they don't limit themselves as to how much of their personality they choose to flaunt. They aren't emo, scene, or hardcore kids. They're metalcore kids.

nu metalcore is a fairly new fusion genre that blends modern metalcore with nu metal. The genre contains elements of both. Screaming, double bass, chugging guitars from metalcore. Aspects from nu metal can include rapping, turntablism, industrial electronics. Bands of this style include ( not in any particular order) Sylar, Blood Youth, Dropout Kings, Infected Rain, Afterlife, Noself, Tallah, My Ticket Home, Hotbox, King 810, Jynx, DED.
That new metalcore sounds very 90s nu metal. That because it's nu metalcore.

MetalCore-The mix of metal and hardcore fast melodic hitting guitars, Thundering drums major double bass, Screaming, growling melodic, meadow singing.

The glory days of Metal which was at its peak in early 2000's before the arrival of mixed genre's (Deathcore, Emo, Scence metal, ect). Some of bands do stay true to what metalcore stands for most have been mixed in with all the different genre's.
Metal is a mess now, So many bands... So many genres.... Bands that dont deserve getting signed are left and right. Metal's worse decade so far. But here are some True Metalcore albums from the glory days.

Alive or just breathing-Killswitch engage
Behind silense and solitude-all that remains
Gone Forever-God forbid
