An 808 is a type of bass often associated with modern hip hop or trap music. However, due to a 2024 TikTok trend in which music producers apply massive amounts of distortion to the 808s, one commenter stated that "808 = essentially a crashout."

This caused 808 to become a "brainrot" term along with other slang words like "crashout," "ts," and "pmo."

The term originates from a synthesizer which could synthesize instruments like basses, kicks, and snares. When using "808" with this synth machine it can be used for any drum, but 99.9% of the time, you're going to see 808 referring to the bass.

The most commonly used variant of 808 is the Spinz 808.
