Get the emomug. Emo, over the years, has gathered a lot of different definitions. It can be used as the shortened version of emotional, emotionally unstable, emotion, etc. It also has become a genre. A lot of people have stereotyped emo, and like most stereotypes, a little of it CAN be true, but not completly. Some examples are
- All emos cut/slit their wrist
- They are always depressed
-Drama queens/kings
-Terrible with kids
There are a lot more, but these are actually a few of the least offensive I have come across. Again, there can be some truth to stereotypes, but most of it is made up.
Most 'Emos' are a bit emotionally sensitive (hence the name 'emo'), which isn't always a bad thing. They are just a little more aware of their emotions, and aren't afraid to show them. Some are. There also is a genre of music that is called Emo. This tends to get mixed up/combined with scene, goth, and punk.

Get the Emomug. What people think/see: people who wear a lot of black and have a lot of eyeliner, pretty quiet and a tad scary, probably super depressed and freaky they listen to music about death and want the world to end.
What people don’t see/real definition: people who are most comfortable in darker, less revealing clothes, people who like song that have meaningful/emotional lyrics but also have good music. People who are shunned a lot because they look different even though they aren’t generally that mean/dark.
Sometimes emos are depressed and sometimes they aren’t. (Just like every other categorization of human being.) emos are more in touch with their emotional side and tend to understand deeper more abstract philosophical ideas, not because they’re morbid, but because they’re intelligent and they understand things other people can’t. They often are misunderstood and choose to express themselves with poetry/music.

“That guy but be goth and like depressed or something he’s wearing all black and being super creepy isn’t he corner.”
“Nah he’s emo. Let’s go talk to him I bet he’s just a little shy and awkward. He’s probably an interesting person.”

Get the Emomug. Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. As the style was echoed by contemporary American punk bands, its sound and meaning shifted and changed, blending with pop punk and indie rock and encapsulated in the early 1990s by groups such as Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate. By the mid 1990s numerous emo acts emerged from the Midwestern and Central United States, and several independent record labels began to specialize in the style.
Emo has been criticized for its androcentrism and the tendency of most emo bands to relegate women to the role of muse or heartbreaker in their lyrics

Get the Emomug. "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
