casual leisure

Casual leisure is an immediately, intrinsically rewarding, relatively short-lived, pleasurable core activity, requiring little or no special training to enjoy it. It is fundamentally hedonic, pursued for its significant level of pure enjoyment, or pleasure. The termed was coined by Robert A. Stebbins (1982) in a conceptual statement about serious leisure, which depicted its casual counterpart as all activity not classifiable as serious. As a scientific concept casual leisure languished in this residual status, until Rojek (1997) and Stebbins (1997; 2001) belatedly recognized its centrality in leisure studies. Stebbins sought to elaborate the idea as a sensitizing concept for exploratory research, as he had earlier for the idea of serious leisure.

In broad, colloquial language casual leisure, hedonic as it is, could serve as the scientific term for doing what comes naturally. Yet, despite the seemingly trivial nature of most casual leisure, I argue elsewhere that it is nonetheless important in personal and social life (Stebbins, 2001b).

Casual Gamer

A casual gamer only plays games casually. These are the people you see playing 2K or some other sports game all day long and nothing else. Hardcore gamers have a much bigger library and tend to play shooters, sports games, strategy games, and much more.

Friends: "Hey, Did anyone hear about the new Battlefield coming out? We were thinking of trying it out!"

Casual Gamer: "Nah, I tried to play the beta (lying) and uninstalled it because the game I always play (2k and nothing else) is much better."

Friends: "Dude, all you ever play is 2K. You're such a casual gamer."

Casual Hit

The act, typically seen at parties, when a man (or woman) makes a pass at another person. It is characterized by the fact that it was not the typical flirt as it was accompanied by either a touch to the small of the back or the shoulder. It can also be noted though the casual ass grab, but this can be seen more as a hit and run.

"You see that guy staring into that girls eyes over there?!"

"Yea that is such a casual hit!"

"...but that guy over there just did a hit and run... she is still looking for the culprit"
