It's a very sweet saying for something that one thinks is absolutely amazing and has no other words for.

When my aunt asked what she got for her birthday, I only told her that it was awesomesauce. She got the iPod she had always wanted.

When something is so good that Awesome just doesn't complete the meaning. Like an amazing devil's food chocolate cake is just not complete without the chocolate frosting. Consider the added "sauce" the frosting!
